Everyone is “Going Green” because all it seems to take is the addition of a few Green products to meet the loose criteria for a Green janitorial service. Green programs do not come packaged in a bottle of Green cleaner. Yet, the many manufactures want us to believe that using their product makes our homes, offices, or janitorial services Green

Going Green is not found in a bottle of reformulated cleanser, but in the practices of the janitorial workforce that are frankly the last and lagging piece of this puzzle. Can you buy a great set of tools and immediately become a great mechanic? Can you buy a set of golf clubs and enter the Masters Tournament? Can a lady buy a size two dress and fit her size ten body into it? What this illustrates is that buying an item does not make you something that you are not.

The Green program means that the workforce needs a working knowledge of Green practices along with the new supply of Green products. The fact is that the workers in a janitorial service as far more important than the choice of products. There are dozens of new procedures that are required for a Green janitorial service that include “Dwell Time,” microfiber use, and how to handle dusting an office.

There are hundreds of issues in HOW the Green janitorial firm is to perform their janitorial tasks that are as important as WHAT Green product happens to suddenly appear in the weekly supplies passed around. Going Green seems to be passed to the workers by osmosis and undefined training protocol. This, quite frankly, means that most Green janitorial services are well-intended frauds to the customers that they serve. Their Green status is little more than a false veneer that has little depth in the character of the people charged with carrying out the Green mandates being passed down to these ill-equipped workers.

There is only one true Green Clean credential in the market today is the federal trademark offered by the Green Clean Institute. It is necessary to understand that the janitorial world is in transition from a “task oriented” business to a superior “service oriented” business. Janitorial services have new mandates, higher expectations, and are expected to provide Green program that will protect the safety, health, and future of all those who inhabit our buildings.

A little study of the word custodian reveals that there is a serious contribution by these often ignored workers. The challenges of our generation creates an even greater duty than ever before. In this era of strain of our resources, new threats to our health, and new environmental legislation, the custodial duty is to protect our general health through a better working environment. The fraud being carried out by quasi-Green janitorial services will soon hit the wall when professionally evaluated.

Instead of pretending to be Green in your janitorial program, why not take the steps to fully integrate your service with the full program. This does not mean that you need to go vegetarian, trade your car for a bicycle, or run off to save the whales. We all know that the Green movement is here to stay, and it is well past time go into the full Green program. A Green program is the culmination of three factors: a Green Agenda by those making decisions, the inclusion of Green Products, and the training needed for Green Practices by the workers. It is well past time that we end the Green fraud and become Green Clean certified janitorial services.
