Austria is a landlocked country surrounded on all sides by other European and Eastern European countries which include Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia. The capital of this very beautiful and dramatic country is Vienna which is located on the banks of the River Danube.
However, along with the spectacular vistas that both Vienna and Salzburg offer this country has a lot more to offer its visitors. There are mountains, lakes and rivers where a variety of different outdoors activities take place from mountain climbing, to skiing and even kayaking.
When it comes to what time of year is best to visit this European country then it depends upon the kinds of activities you are looking to do. For example if you want to enjoy some hiking or mountain biking then summer is the best time. As for skiing and snowboarding well of course then the winter is the best time of the year to visit Austria.
The weather is at its warmest from April through to October, however be prepared as these two months can be slightly colder so it is worth bringing some warm clothing with you. However, if you find heat somewhat difficult then avoid the months of July and August as at these times the heat can become extremely unbearable for some people. Plus what you will also find is this is their high holiday season and prices for accommodation etc increase as does the heat.
Also another reason for avoiding the months of July and August is because of the high temperatures many of the major attractions will be closed at this time. So if you intend to visit the Spanish Riding School or go to the Opera then choose another time rather than these.
Although these attractions may be closed there are plenty of other events which take place in Austria throughout the year. Certainly when it comes to music festivals this country is world renowned for the ones that it has. The first ones begin at the beginning of the year and New Year in Vienna is wonderful with its concerts and lavish balls. Then each month you are likely to find something happening, in February the Shrovetide Carnival takes place which is a celebration of spring returning.
As well as the festivals already mentioned another important one in the Austrian calendar takes place on the 2nd Thursday after Whitsun to celebrate Corpus Christi. In places such as Salzkammergut rather than the carnival taking place in the town instead it is held on the lake. But of all the music festivals which take place in Austria throughout the year the major one is the Wiener Festwochen which starts in May and continues through until the middle of June.
If you do decide to go on holiday to Austria as you will soon discover this beautifully landlocked country has so much more to offer its visitors than just skiing and mountain climbing. Certainly there are enough things for one to do and see that you may find yourself having to return several times in order to take it all in.
