Sit N Go poker tourneys are very exciting. Strategy is key. Unless you have a monster hand that you will go all the way with, you want to try to keep the pots small. Mid pairs are a good case in point. From under the gun, or even 2nd or 3rd to act, it’s very easy to get punished.
In other poker games, you might do very well by raising with weak pocket pairs (22-88). This can create some deception to set yourself up with a huge win. It’s safer with these hands to limp or call small raises. You will only hit your set one in eight times, so it’s better to be careful.
When the blinds are large compared to your stack, you have to play offensive poker. Stealing the blinds whenever possible is a must. In a sense it’s like, “I dare you” at this point. If you don’t steal some blinds you will find your stack too short to scare anyone off and you will lose the ability to steal extra chips.
When the blinds get real big compared to your stack, your two choices are to push all in or fold. You can make a normal raise if you want to, but you should be planning to put all your chips in.. You really can’t afford to bet and then fold.
If you are playing against safe players you can attack more often expecting folds. Stack size needs to be considered here too. Players will try to knock you out when they have a lot of chips. Watch out for the short stacks because they may have no other option but to call. The in middle stacks will fold more often and only call with stong hands.
Bubble play has a lot to do with everyone’s stack size. With the same two cards, you might go all in versus a short stack, and fold to a medium or large stack. This will protect the remaining chips that you have.
When you’re the short stack, you need to judge when to go all in, but not just by your hand. Sometimes you can push any two cards if you have enough chips to hurt your opponents. On the other hand, you need a better hand when your opponent can afford to call you.
When you have the chip lead, people will fear you and you should take their blinds often. The players with mid sized stacks are easy prey. They fear getting eliminated before the short stack goes out.
The toughest spot, especially on the bubble, is being the middle man. Chip leaders threaten to eliminate you, and the small guys are ready to risk it all to get back into the game. You have to have higher quality hands in this spot. Very hard decisions in this situation arise.
This involves learning which move is better in different situations. Do you go all in or forld? One part of the formula is predicting what your opponents will call you with. When that decision is made, it’s push or wait.
So these are most of the basics specifically for the SNG games. You could write an entire article on each of these ideas. Develop your knowledge and skills in these areas, and maybe you will be beating the Sit N Gos. Happy hunting.
