Dog diabetes can become a serious disease if not diagnosed and treated early. Complications at a later time can include nerve damage as well as blindness. A veterinarian can prescribe medications that can stabalize the disease and help your dog live a more normal life. Injections are one method of treatment, or a course of tablets depending on the seriousness of the disease.
Insulin injections can be given in small amounts at the start of dog diabetes treatment so that the blood sugar levels can begin to slowly stabilize. In some cases your dog may need to be treated while staying in the hospital for a few days. If the disease is more stable, then your dog can be treated as an outpatient.
Therefore it is vitally important to have your dog begin treatment immediately if he or she is found to have this. The treatment or management of this illness will be the same as a human. Your dog may need to have insulin shots to balance the glucose levels. While most dogs will certainly not enjoy having daily shots; this is required to maintain your dog’s good health. After a while, a dog may become compliant to the injections. A very strict and exact diet is needed as well. Certain foods can shoot sugar levels to dangerous heights. Lack of certain foods can allow sugar to become so low that a dog can go into shock.
One of the most important things to remember for a dog with diabetes is that a strictly controlled diet is critical. A well balanced diet for your dog can increase it’s life expectancy greatly. A diabetic dog should be eating meals that are high in fiber and low to moderate in carbohydrates. Cook the meals at home so you know exactly what your dog is eating.
Giving your dog a shot of insulin can cause blood sugar to drop (hypoglycemia). Your canine may start to shake. Keep a small container of Karo syrup or honey on hand. Rub on his gums until he stops shaking. If this happens, head to the vet immediately.
