Llandudno is a great base from which you can explore some of North Wales most popular attractions. If you like your tours to be organised then Llandudno has lots of daily coach trips available to the very best attractions. If doing your own thing is more your style then you’ll ideally need a car to get to the attractions as public transport in North Wales isn’t great. However you decide to explore Llandudno is the ideal base with a great range of accommodation mixed with two terrific beaches.

Llandudno’s closest attraction is Conwy Castle which is located in the town of Conwy approximately 5 miles from Llandudno. The castle was built in the 13th century during the conflict between the English and Welsh and is remarkably well preserved. Conwy Castle is open most days throughout the year and offers great views of the area as well as a fascinating tour of local history.

For a great family day out the Welsh Mountain Zoo is located in the nearby town of Colwyn Bay. The Welsh Mountain Zoo is the only wildlife zoo in North Wales where you can walk around at your own pace and enjoy the shows. The zoo has a children’s play area where they can burn off some energy and an onsite restuarant when you want refreshements.

Llandudno is ideally situated for a day out to Mount Snowdon, the tallest mountain in England and Wales. An ideal way to reach the summit is via the Snowdon Mountain Railway which takes you from the base station in the town of Llanberis to the summit. The railway is a great journey that takes approximately 4 hours as a round trip and offers spectacular views on clear days of the mountains of North Wales.

Electric Mountain is another great attraction in Llanberis and is the visitor centre for the Dinorwig underground power station. Visitors can explore the centre for free or take a tour of the power station for a small charge. The tour takes you deep into the mountain where you can see the huge pumps and learn how this modern wonder was created.

Nearer to Llandudno is Bodnant Garden which is located in the Conwy valley about 10 miles south of Llandudno. The garden covers 80 acres of both formal and informal gardens which you can walk around at your leisure. Of special note is the Italiante terraces in the formal gardens and the Dell in the valley with its waterfalls and bridges.

Moving further away from Llandudno once again the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog is the perfect location to learn about North Wales slate mining. The Llechwedd Slate Caverns are a huge underground labyrinth that take you on a tour of North Wales largest 19th century industry. You can take a train tour into the deep caverns and marvel at this underground world.

Once you’ve finished exploring the slate mines you may want to journey into Blaenau Ffestiniog itself and catch the Ffestiniog Railway to Porthmadog. The railway was originally constructed to transport slate to the docks from the mines but fell into disrepair when the industry declined in the 1940’s. Volunteers repaired the railway in the 1950’s and it reopened to become one of North Wales most popular tourist attractions offering a wonderful journey through the mountains.
