1/ Sail boat or Cruiser Try this quick quiz to help you discover if you are more receptive to sailing or motor cruising
Can I do with just basic need or do I like all the mod cons?
Do I look forward to the journey or the destination?
Backpacking is OK or I need a bit of privacy?
Do I prefer a camping or a resort?
If your all about the first alternative you would be OK on a sail boat. If the second alternative is more you, go got the motor cruiser. If your a bit of both it may swing on how long you intend to be on the charter but I would lean toward the motor cruiser.
2/ Who and How Many People do I Take Who you take on your boat has a lot to do with how much fun you have no matter where your destination is or how you get there. Even on the bigger yacht conditions are still pretty cramped especially if the weather is a bit ordinary. If you choose a yacht only go with people who you have been in similar tight situations with before or family. You don’t want to go on as friends and get of as something less. Motor cruisers are a lot more forgiving especially the bigger ones
3/What Style Boat
The most spacious you can pay for
The most recently built you can pay for
The most well appointed you can pay for
Built with facilities and services suited to the particular needs of bareboat charter
To Skipper or not to Skipper Most charter company can offer you a skipper for part or all of your charter, it is a substantial extra cost but well worth it for some. Most people who charter a yacht have someone in there group who has some sail experience, which I would recommend. As for a motor cruiser, if you can drive a car you can steer a boat. Most groups I have dealt with have already worked out who the skipper will be, sometimes he/she has been self appointed. In any case the skipper should
Be able to see well
Be alert to their position and those of the vessels around them
Be sober while in control of the vessel
Be tolerant of other boater and not in a rush
The word is full of great places to charter a sailing or cruising yacht from the Bahamas to the Greek Islands my favorite place is The Whitsunday Islands of the coast of North Queensland Australia. These days my preferred mode of transport on the water is a motor cruiser. I have had many great days sailing but I do like a few creature comforts if I am out overnight, especially with a few friends. I hope this little article will help yo make the right decision for you. All the best
