Have you been looking for top quality neem products but did not know what to look for? Neem products are starting to become more available, but right now are mostly only found on the web or in small beauty shops and specialty stores. These products are not easy to find, so it is easy to grab the first thing you find on the shelf just because it says neem on the bottle. Here are some quick tips that will help you make an educated choice before purchasing the wrong stuff.

Figure Out How The Oil Was Removed From The Neem Seeds There are a couple of methods commonly used today to extract the neem oil from the seeds. As you may have guessed, not all extraction process are to be trusted. The method that produces the most desirable neem seed oil is called cold pressing. Cold pressing neem oil is the best, because most active compounds remain intact. Cold pressing is also the oldest method of extraction. It is done with a mechanical device that squeezes the oil from the dried seeds. Always make sure to buy only cold pressed neem oil where possible.

The next process uses hot water vapor and extreme temperatures. Though this method gets more oil from the seeds than using a mechanical press, a lot of the active compounds in the neem oil are destroyed due to the exposure to high heat.

This next process is the one that most neem oil dealers use because it extracts the most oil. The technique is called solvent extraction, and almost always hexane (also known as gasoline) is the solvent that is used. Though this process extracts just about all of the neem oil from the seeds, the chemicals render useless many of the desireable compounds in the neem seed oil. And along with this and the fact that the solvent is poisonous, it is highly recommended to look for products that do not contain neem oil that was extracted using them.

Avoid Additives Almost all cosmetics and bath/shower products today contain chemical compounds to “enhance” the products performance. But keep in mind that some of these additives may actually cause unwanted side effects. Two of the most common compounds that may be in a lot of bath bath products are Lauryl Sulfates (SLS) and Parabens. Lauryl Sulfates are mostly used as foam enhancers, because they are cheap and work pretty well. Many inexpensive neem shampoo and soap products use these additives as well. But, these chemicals are a known irritant. The US Food and Drug Administration encourages manufacturers not to use them.

Parabens are common preservatives, and though there has been no scientific evidence that they are potentially dangerous, they are starting to be avoided by many. Some organizations feel they should be avoided in order to err on the side of safety.

Try To Find Certified Organic Ingredients Quite obviously, organic ingredients are better than non-organic ingredients. These are natural substances, and have not been exposed to man-made chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, the like. Look for labels that list only organic ingredients. If a vendor uses organic ingredients, they will almost always state this selling point on the label.
