HEPA air purifiers are one of the most effective ways to remove even the smallest of particles from the air in your home. Using technology developed by the government in the 1950s to protect servicemen from radioactive particles, HEPA air purifiers will reliably and efficiently keep the atmosphere in your home free from wandering particles.

HEPA is an abbreviation to describe a “High Efficiency Particulate Arresting” purifier, originally designed in the 1940s by the US military to prevent the spread of airborne radioactive particles. HEPA air purifiers are now commercially available for the home, but the same technology is used for high-spec industrial air purifiers where high quality, pure air is essential in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, computer chip manufacture and hospitals. One common application of the HEPA air purifier is in the domestic vacuum cleaner. To avoid the release of unhealthy dust and other particles into the air during operation, almost every vacuum cleaner on the market today has a small built-in air purifier.

There are a variety of air filters available on the market today, some more efficient than others. HEPA air purifiers are widely regarded as the best solution to provide the most efficient form of air filtering; the HEPA certification is the industry standard. HEPA purifiers are made up of a pad containing many fibre layers that trap the tiny particles that are pulled into the filter system. It can efficiently remove at least 99% of the minute airborne particles including dust, dust mites, pollen and some bacteria. When the particles are caught in the filter, the air purifier blows the clean air back into the room, this is much more pleasant to breathe in! A HEPA air purifier filter pad is removable, and will need replacing over time as the dirty particles build up and the air filtering becomes less efficient. Some of the newer models contain a washable pad that can be taken out, cleaned and replaced.

A HEPA air filter is capable of removing a minimum of 99.97% of all airborne particles down to the size of 0.3 microns. These specifications are part of what strictly defines a HEPA filter and separates HEPA from other types of air filtration systems.

HEPA purifiers, however, are not air odor cleaners. While the 0.3 microns filter holes ensure the entrapment of many airborne particles, the molecular structure of chemicals and odors means that they will still be able to pass through. Many HEPA manufacturers eliminate this problem by combining air odor cleaner technology in their HEPA units, ensuring for you the best of both worlds.
