If you’ve been to Adelaide, you’ll quickly recognize it as Australia’s wine capital. However, there’s a lot more to this city than just its great wine. Here are some recommended tours to help add dimension to any visit.
Lots of tours are available in Adelaide - there’s one for almost every tourist, no matter what their budget or schedule might be. Diverse, exciting options are available, and many of them offer a chilled complimentary glass of wine.
First time visitors will enjoy the free 99B and 99C buses, offering an interesting look at the city and the opportunity to get to know it better. You’ll see all the shopping and entertainment options available, and get to look at some of Adelaide’s impressive architecture.
If you have a strong sense of history, try the insightful Culture Heritage Guided Walk, which narrates the colorful history of Adelaide and the achievements of her founding father, William Light, and many other of the state’s notable explorers, politicians, benefactors and pioneers.
Adelaide Private Tours can provide you with a unique look at everyday Adelaide life. This tour includes a trip to local rural villages, dinner with a family in the area, and meetings with area artists.
There is also a “Pubs and Pulpits” tour which brings visitors right to the doorstep of two things that Adelaide is famous for - its drinking places and its churches.
Those who love the great outdoors will have a great time on the Guided Bird Walks and free guided walks of the Botanic Gardens. Travel up and down the Torrens River and get a chance to look closely at the animals and plants of the region.
For surfing and whale watching, sign up with Premier Stateliner for the Victor Harbor and Cockle Train Tour which takes you to Victor Harbor, Port Elliott, Middleton and Goolwa. They also offer the Little Penguin Colony tour to nearby Granite Island which lets you witness the heart-warming sight of hundreds of small penguins walking on the beach just before sunset.
But if wine tasting is really your thing, there are dozens of organized and guided tours that will guide you merrily along Adelaide’s five world-famous wine regions - the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale and the Coonawarra - which are all known for producing multi-award-winning wines.
Dozens of tours are also available for visiting wine tasting locations, as well as stopping for grape varieties and delicious food. You’ll see Lutheran Churches and old towns founded by settlers of German heritage. Take tours with Gray Line, Busway Travel Service and Adelaide Sightseeing. You won’t want to miss A Taste of Southern Australia - a tour that offers private, luxurious introductions to some of the best food and wine the state can offer.
Coonawarra makes a great weekend trip. It’s where some of the classic red wines that Adelaide is known for are produced. It’s also the site of the Naracoorte Caves Conservation Park, a World Heritage list venue.
The McLaren Vale Food and Wine tour will take you to the McLaren Vale, which offers 48 extraordinary wineries as well as the state’s most magnificent beaches, including Maslin Beach.
