We attended the recent consumer electronics show, and noted with great interest various new camcorder models. With a number of new features, these new models vary in price range and offer new technological enhancements of interest to anyone considering a camcorder purchase. Our staff examined these new models and compiled a list of five factors to consider before you buy.

Tip One: Consider What You Really Need

Sony and Panasonic have rolled out new models featuring face detection technology, which may or may not be worth the added investment for you. Ask yourself if you’ve been happy with facial images with your current model. If the answer is no, you’ll be pleased to hear that face detection technology will automaticaly resolve any blurring or over exposure problems.

Tip Two: Keeping That Image Stabilized

A camcorder will always offer image stabilization technology. This technology overcomes a less than steady hand while shooting video, and is either electronic or optical. Optical image stabilization usually provides better results. Make sure you really need it by asking yourself if you’re happy with electronic image stabilization commonly found in moderately priced camcorders. Also, be aware that optical image technology is slowly but surely becoming more affordable.

Tip Three: Long Timer Or Short Timer?

Camcorder batteries are another potential add on expense. Is it worth it to pay extra for an upgrade? It all depends on how long you typically shoot footage. If you normally shoot less than an hour at a time, the standard battery should suit you just fine. Consider investing the extra $75 or so if you tend to shoot for extended periods of time.

Tip Four: What Screen Size Is Best?

If you shoot a lot of video outdoors, make sure your screen will yield good results in bright sunlight. Conversely, if you use your camcorder primarilly indoors in lower light levels, be certain you have the appropriate shutter mode, lest your video turn out blurry. Taking lighting factors into consideration and buying a model with appropriate screen size is a huge factor as to whether you’ll be happy with your purchase or not.

Tip Five: How’s The Microphone?

With a camcorder, sound and often be just as important as video. To ensure clear, uninterrupted sound, consider a zoom microphone. Working in tandem with a zoom lens, a zoom microphone is an upgrade feature that eliminates interference from other voices. If sound clarity is a priority for you, this will be well worth the added cost.

Taking these five tips into consideration will help ensure there’s a good match between you and your new camcorder. Make sure to purchase a model that includes features you’ll use and enjoy for years to come. If you do decide to pursue the latest technology, be certain the features and upgrades solve a nagging problem you’re currently experiencing, otherwise the added cost will be nothing more than added cost.
